Youth and Family Therapist, Filipino Mental Health Initiative of San Mateo County
Stephanie Garma Balón is an Youth & Family (Expressive Arts) Therapist with StarVista’s Child & Parent Services Program; and the Daly City Youth Health Center in Northern San Mateo County. Stephanie integrates music, visual art, role-play, ritual, writing, and poetry in her practice. With a Masters in Counseling Psychology (Expressive Art Therapy) from California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and an undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Washington, her work is rooted in trauma-informed care, narrative therapy, person-centered therapy, relational-cultural, and systemic therapy. As Filipino Mental Health Initiative Co-Chair of San Mateo County, Stephanie has an extensive non-profit background in community mental health addressing health inequities amongst underserved populations, namely within the Filipina/o/x community. She has been recognized with a Certificate of Commendation by San Mateo County District 5 Supervisor, David J. Canepa, for her community activism. For instance, Stephanie worked in partnership with other community leaders to declare May 10th the official “Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Asian American Mental Health Day” in San Mateo County.
